Step by step

Installation

Run setup.exe and follow the provided screens, please use the default installation folder (this will avoid additional configuration afterwards).



The installer will extract the necessary files in C:\Program Files (x86)\BCSBuilder\ directory, open the TomVanGaever.SharePoint.VS2010.BCSGenerator.Logic.vsix file. This allows you to activate the Visual Studio Extension.



The extension activates a new functionality in your SharePoint project, to review the extension.
Click Tools and open Extensions Manager



In order to use BCS Builder, a BDCM http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff798309.aspx file is required.
You can use the builtin SharePoint project template to accomplish this.



When you modified your entity class (for example, by adding multiple new properties), open the context menu on your project and you'll notify the Generate BCS Model action. This action allows you to generate all the required XML in the BDCM file.



A new dialog appears and it allows you to follow a wizard in order to decide what specific functionality you would like to provide in your external list and external content type.

First of all select the entity class you would like to use.


Select the service class that will retrieve the information and populate the entity classes


Specify the property that will be used as unique identifier


Select the properties you would like to present as list columns


Check the checkbox if you would like to provide filter options, this can be usefull when you want to use this list in a lookup field from another list


Check the checkbox if you would like to provide search capabilties to this external contenttype, this is required if the results need to appear in the searc results.


Check the checkbox if you would like your end-users to create new items in this external list


Check the checkbox if you would like your end-users to update existing items in this external list


Check the checkbox if you would like your end-users to delete existing items in this external list


Overview the provided setings and click the generate bdcm file button.


Select the bdcm file that visual studio created in order to overwrite this file with the new generated xml by using the settings you provided.
